These spaces are a must have for kiddos. Storage all things school, and a place to sit and take off muddy shoes. Thus the term "mud room". We also call these "drop zones", and they are naturally placed right off the day-to-day entrance to the home.
On a totally different note, cubby must be one of the cutest words ever created. So much so that it leads me to wonder if it's actually real, or just some weird slang.
